UNIX is
not a set of code thought up by one company like Microsoft
Windows, UNIX is a very detailed set of rigorous
specifications that any UNIX has to provide and conform to
(www.unix-systems.org). UNIX has evolved over an extended
period of time (see
history chart) and
is still evolving.
Commercial versions of UNIX are sold with the hardware but there are also many verions of UNIX that are free, all of which must conform to the UNIX standard. Linux is a UNIX kermel that has caught the eye of many forward thinking companies as it is more stable, provides many of those functions for enterprises as standard, a wealth of third party software, an even bigger wealth of public domain software, runs on all make of computers and is free. Apple computer's new operating system isbased on UNIX (MacOSX) and is now the worlds largest reseller of UNIX. There are many other techical reasons for selecting UNIX over other operating systems, however this research is over too you now you've had your appetite wetted. As a result of all this activity, UNIX has evoled into a stable, multitasking, multiuser, computing environment with a rich set of software provided as standard. Although MicroSoft Windows is nasty and expensive, it is also very poor in the standard set of functions it delivers as standard. MicroSoft Windows is basically an operating system designed to force customers to keep on paying for more and more functionality. Now I've alienated all of you desktop types, I would like to offer a way if rectifying those niggling problems you have with your PC, please go to the PC and Apple Support section. |
